Robin, a lad just reaching the age of majority, must flee for his life. With his father murdered, no friends, and his life in jeopardy if his laird catches him, Robin must find his own way. After taking service with a neighboring laird, Robin works as a stable hand while training to become a guardsman.
Making both friends and enemies in the castle, thanks to a mysterious black mare who is determined to choose her own master, he must remain alert, and aware.
Insulted men may think that vengeance is sweet, but they know not vengeance’s cost. Whether the slight is perceived or real, some men will not halt until their honor is avenged, or they are dead.
There are foes both without and within, and battle could be at the gates before they know it.
